PTT Plc’s Chief Executive Pailin Chuchottaworn confirmed in mid-September that his company is looking to complete the purchase of a US-based polylactic acid (PLA) plant before the end of September. Further details on the deal could not be revealed at this stage of the negotiations, it was added.

In January 2011, the company had already invested $60 mln in the Massachusetts-based biotechnology firm Myriant Technologies to study the potential of bioplastics. In July PTT then formed a joint venture with Mitsubishi Chemical Corp. of Japan to produce polybutylene succinate (PBS) and bio-based succinate acid plastic pellets from sugar. PTT and Mitsubishi are equal partners in the venture PTT MCC Biochem.

In mid-September PTT MCC Biochem additionally entered into a partnership with BioAmber Inc. on the production of PBS in Thailand.
